Pure is my word compass.
Words matter. Words can stir a multitude of feelings within you. For me, a word that never loses its depth is "Pure." Pure takes on a new meaning, a new layer, in every application and phase of life. Here's an explanation of the word "Pure" to turn words into self-coaching tools, and I'm eager to share these tools. I wrote this text as part of the BreathFluencer program because the world can never have enough BreathFluencers.
Pure Inspiration from Buddhism
It's never the intention to live like the Buddha, in fact, it's never the intention to live someone else's path at all. Many historical and living figures offer great inspiration, but where things often go wrong is when we try to emulate their lives. This is impossible and will inevitably lead to new lessons. Of course, there are figures in the past and present who want us to obey and follow them, but the truly great (spiritual) leaders inspire us to find our own path, just like the Buddha.
Buddha's path as 'pure' inspiration, not a destination
What does "pure" mean?
In Buddhism, the term "pure" is used, sometimes referred to as "right," but that can be more confusing than clarifying. "Pure" is a term where reasonable consensus can be reached.
Buddha speaks of the Four Noble Truths:
1. There is suffering. We strive to understand the truth of this suffering (Dukkha).
2. Suffering has a cause. We come to the realization that suffering is caused by desire.
3. Suffering has an end. We commit ourselves to the awareness and insight that we suffer less through desiring less.
4. There is a path to the end of suffering. We strive to follow this path.
The Eightfold Path:
1. Right Understanding
2. Right Intent
3. Right Speech
4. Right Action
5. Right Livelihood
6. Right Effort
7. Right Mindfulness
8. Right Concentration
If you're interested in delving into the deeper meaning of the Eightfold Path, I encourage you to explore Buddhism further. Many books have been written on this topic, and there are also gatherings to practice together. I was introduced to this through https://www.recoverydharma.nl/ and it played a significant role in my journey to live an alcohol-free life since 2020.
